Women's Basketball Makes it 4 Straight

The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team made it four straight victories with a 76 – 61 win over the Houghton Highlanders in the AMC opener for each team. The game was played Tuesday November 16, 2010 at the Voller Athletic Center on the Roberts campus.

After the Highlanders (2 – 1, 0 – 1 AMC) opened the game with a three pointer by Stephanie Hudson, The Raiders (4 – 0, 1 – 0 AMC) answered with a three pointer from junior Bianca Jones and never trailed again. The game stayed close the entire first half; with Roberts opening their largest first half lead of 8 points on a jumper from sophomore Lindsay Kendall. Houghton would close to 1 on a basket from sophomore Michelle Persons, but the Raiders would score the last 5 points of the half on a three pointer from sophomore Marissa Bunce and jumper from senior guard Tiffany Wilson to lead 37 – 31 at the break.

The Raiders continued that momentum through the half and opened the second half on a 13 – 7 run to push the lead to 12. Junior Sarah Child scored back to back baskets inside to start the run and it was punctuated by a three point basket from junior Morgan Skiff. The Raiders would maintain a double figure lead the rest of the game, eventually going up 21 on a layup by Jones after a steal and assist from senior forward Brittany McMillon.

The Raiders were led by Kendall with a career high 14 points and 3 steals. McMillon and Child also hit double figures, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively. The duo also combined for 15 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. McMillon and Wilson led the Raiders with 4 steals each. Bunce added a game high 4 assists and contributed 3 steals. The Highlanders were led by senior guard Shannon Daugherty with 15 points. Persons finished with 12 and senior Ashley Dupler chipped in with 9 points and a game high 14 rebounds.

“I thought our defense was the key. We played great team defense and our post defenders were great on Dupler,” said Coach Bob Segave. “She is one of the outstanding players in the NAIA and we did a super job on her. We forced 32 turnovers and were able to convert that into 31 points. Our offensive rebounds (24) led to 28 second chance points. Kendall shot the ball really well and our entire team contributed, as they have all season.”

The Raiders are back at the VAC this weekend for games on Friday November 19, 2010 against NAIA Division 1 Rio Grande (5 – 0). That game will take place at 6:00 PM. Then the team is back for a 2:00 PM contest on Saturday November 20, 2010 against Fisher College, MA (1 – 0).
