Lady Raiders Bounce Back, Defeat Ursuline 72-57

The Raiders (12-8, 5-3 AMC) got another AMC Conference road win on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Ursuline College.  The game was played on the Arrows (5 -16, 2-6 AMC) campus in the O'Brien Athletic Center.

The Arrows came out strong, leading 10 – 6 at the twelve minute mark on a jumper from sophomore Laura Campbell. The Lady Raiders answered with a 10 – 1 run, keyed by 6 points from Brittany McMillon (SR, Lions, NY) and 4 points from Lindsay Kendall (SO, Rochester, NY). While Ursuline would pull even twice more in the first half, the Lady Raiders would not trail again.   Roberts closed the half on a 7 – 3 run started by a jumper from Cynnetha Bellinger (SR, Binghamton, NY) and finished by 5 points from McMillon. The Raiders led 31-27 at the half.

Roberts opened the second half with a 14 – 3 run. McMillon started the run with a steal and a layup, and then Tiffany Wilson (SR, Rochester, NY) converted a pass from Bianca Jones (JR, Long Island City, NY) and converted a three point play. Jumpers from Sarah Child (JR, Albany, NY) and Marissa Bunce (SO, Phelps, NY) continued the surge, which culminated with a basket from Brittany Williams (JR, Rochester, NY) and a long three from Bunce.

While the Lady Raiders struggled from the foul line in the game, they shot 41% from the field and forced 28 turnovers, while committing just 11. Wilson, McMillon, and Williams each had 3 assists to lead the team, and Child contributed game highs with 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. McMillon had a season high 9 steals. The 9 steal game is one off of the school record of 10 set by Jennifer Stuczynski in 2003-2004.

McMillon led three Raiders in double figures with a game high 16 points. Bunce continued her hot shooting and finished with 15 points, and Wilson added 13 points and 3 steals. Michele Hare led the Arrows with 11 points and Josie Smith finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

“These back to back conference road weekends are always difficult,” said Raider coach Bob Segave. “I was proud of the way the team rallied after Ursuline got off to the lead. We stayed focused, and kept with the game plan. Brittany (McMillon) was so active in the passing lanes, and Sarah (Child) really controlled the paint today. Tiffany (Wilson) and Cee Bee (Bellinger) did a great job of getting us set. We dropped the turnovers significantly from last night and that was a key for us.”

The Raiders return to action at home this weekend with AMC Conference games against Wilberforce University on Friday January 28, 2011 and Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday January 29, 2011. Tip off on Friday is at 6PM, and Saturdays game will tip off at 2PM. Saturday's game will be broadcast by Mount Vernon at www.wnzr.fm/studio/sports.php.
