The Roberts Wesleyan College Track team competed in the NAIA Indoor Track Championships at the GaREAT Sports Complex in Geneva, OH on March 3-5. There were over 100 teams represented along with five individuals from Roberts Wesleyan College. The five individuals from RWC were all part of breaking three school records.
The first event for RWC was the 4000m DMR (Distance Medley Relay, 1200, 400, 800, 1600). The team of Kendra Zaffuto, Kelsey Medeiros, Mary Stewart and Sarah Krolick broke their own record with a time of 12:39.26. They finished 6th out of 8 teams in their heat and placed 21st overall after being seeded 29th out of 33 teams.
Kendra Zaffuto (JR, Rochester, NY) ran the 1000m. She ran a good race putting her in contention for the finals with a 4th place finish in the 1st of heat of 2. The top 2 in each heat qualified for finals along with the next 4 fastest times. The excitement of waiting to see if she qualified for finals dwindled as the runners in the second heat were slightly faster. She finished 11th (seeded 13th) while breaking her own school record with a time of 2:59.95.
Aaron Steensma (JR, Marion, NY) had a great heptathlon breaking his own school record by scoring 4731 points. In the seven events he ran the 60 in 7.48, long jumped 21' 1”, threw the shot 36' 5”, high jumped 5' 10”, ran the 60H in 9.26, pole vaulted 13' 11” and ran the 1000m in 2:48.62. His 4731 points placed him 11th. Aaron was seeded 12th in the event
Kelsey Medeiros (JR, New Bedford, MA), after a great indoor season, had a bad start and never recovered. She ran 9.42 in the 60H and finished 26th.
This ended the indoor season in which six school records were set. The outdoor season begins on March 26 at the Bill Van Horne Invitational at Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV
