HOUGHTON, N.Y. (September 27, 2011) – The Men's Soccer defeated the Houghton College Highlanders 1-0 tonight in a classic rivalry game.

Both teams couldn't muster many scoring opportunities in the first half as the teams were adjusting to a slippery surface.

The Raiders saw their first opportunity come in the 10th minute when Matthew Hohler put a header on frame, making the Highladers goalkeeper, Steve Zacchigna tip the ball over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later, Andy Vanderhoof blasted a shot just wide right of the goal.

The Raiders finally broke through in the 27th minute off the foot of Michael Cunningham. The freshman took a free kick just outside the 18-yard box on the left side, sending in a curling ball past Zacchigna's hands to the upper right corner.

The Highlanders had the first chance in the second half when Cory Brautigam sent in a rocket just inches over the crossbar in 50th minute.

Cunningham nearly scored again in the 75th minute when he found himself in open space on the left side in the 18-yard box. The shot beat Zachhinga, but hit the right post and deflected away.

With the win, the Raiders improve to 6-4-1 and 4-0-0 in the conference.

The Raiders are off until next Tuesday when they host Walsh University at 7pm.
