HOUGHTON, N.Y. (November 17, 2012) – The Men's Soccer team punched their ticket to the NCCAA National Championship this evening by shutting out Geneva (Pa.) College, 2-0 in the East Region title game.
The Redhawks were able to force their will early on when Derrek Holmes scored inside the box off of a corner kick from Stehpen Stewart in the eighth minute of the game. The goal, which beat Geneva's goalkeeper Bryan Butler, is Holmes' third of the season.
Freshman
Brandon Bianchi was able add an insurance goal in the 81
st minute off of another corner kick from Stewart to lift Roberts Wesleyan to their fourth straight win. The Redhawks, who last booked a trip to the NCCAA National Championship in 2010, have found their stride by winning seven of their last nine games
With the two assists, Stewart now has a team-high of six assists this season to go along with four goals.
In goal,
Michael Scavone was called upon to make three saves in the game, earning his fourth shutout of the season.
The win improves the Redhawks' record to 10-8-1 as they will now prepare for the NCCAA National Championship, which will be held Nov. 28-Dec. 1 in Kissimmee, Fla.
