Raiders Down Houghton, Advance to NCCAA East Region Finals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (February 25, 2012) - The Women's Basketball team defeated the Houghton College Highlanders 67-60 in the NCCAA East Region Semi-Finals this afternoon.
 
The Raiders will travel to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene University in the East Region finals with a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament on the line.
 
After falling behind 8-5 early on, the Raiders regained control of the game after going on a 15-4 run half way through first half.
 
The Highlanders would climb back into the game, going on an 11-6 run, to cut the Raiders lead to 26-23 with 6:39 left in the half.  The Raiders then went on a 15-3 run of their own late in the half as they took a 40-26 lead into the locker room.
 
In the second half, the Highlanders clawed their way back from the 14 point half-time deficit to tie the game with 6:42 remaining after Megan Sampson hit a pair of free-throws to make 52-52.
 
The Raiders would limit the Highlanders to only free throws over the last six minutes to seal the win for the home team.
 
Marissa Sell led the Raiders with a game high 18 points and 10 rebounds. The freshman tied her season high after going 7 of 11 from the floor.
 
Senior Bianca Jones added 12 points for the Raiders, connecting 6 of 9 from the field. Sydni Lester chipped in 12 points as well to go along with 2 steals.
 
The Highlanders were led by Megan Sampson's 15 points and 3 assists.
 
The win improves the Raiders overall record to 21-10.
