Women's Basketball: Redhawks Defeat District of Columbia, 67-61

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 26, 2013) – The Women's Basketball team downed the University of the District of Columbia, 67-61, this afternoon inside the Voller Athletic Center.

The win gives Roberts Wesleyan a split in the season series against the Firebirds as they fell to UDC in the nation's capital by three points on Dec. 15 in the nation's capital.

The home team started out quickly, jumping out to an 11-0 lead. 

The Redhawks led by as much as 15 when Ashley Cianfriglia hit one of her six three-pointers to make it 27-12 lead with 7:34 left in the first half.

Roberts Wesleyan would go into the locker room with a 34-25 lead at halftime.

After trading baskets over the first five minutes of the second half, the Firebirds stormed back with a 14-1 run over a three minute span to tie the game at 45-45 with 11:56 remaining.  

Cianfriglia ended the game with a season-high 20 points after going 6-11, all of which came from beyond the arc. The guard also was a perfect 2 of 2 from the line.

Down the stretch, it would be Roberts Wesleyan closing out the game with a 10-4 run to secure the win, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Marissa Sell earned a double-doulbe after scoring 17 points and grabbing game-high 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Marissa Bunce added 12 points for the Redhawks after hitting 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. Bunce also posted a game-high five assists.

As a team, Roberts Wesleyan shot just 37.5% from the floor as the Firebirds shot a similar 38.1%.

The Firebirds' bench scored 32 points compared to Roberts Wesleyan's 11 points.

UDC also edged the Redhawks 38-34 in rebounds.

The win improves Roberts Wesleyan to 9-8 overall and 4-6 in the East Coast Conference.

The team is back in action next Thursday when they visit Mercy College for a 5:30pm game in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
