Men's Soccer Defeat St. Thomas Aquinas for First Road Win

SPARKILL, N.Y. (November 1, 2013) – The Men's Soccer team picked up their first road win of the season as they defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-2, in East Coast Conference action this afternoon.

After conceding the game's first goal just 17 seconds into the first half, the Redhawks evened the score in the 12th minute. After receiving a pass from Malcolm Shaw, junior forward Michael Cunningham sent his shot past the Spartans' goalkeeper.

Senior Johnny Lobene then put the visitors ahead eight minutes later as Shaw provided his second assist of the game for the Redhawks.

St. Thomas Aquinas equalized two minutes later when Jack Legg beat Florian Witte, stealing the ball off of a failed clearing attempt by Roberts Wesleyan.

Then, in the 63rd minute, Derek Holmes put his head on the ball off of a Stephen Stewart free kick, sending it to the back of the net to win the game.

Overall, Roberts Wesleyan outshot the Spartans 32 to 20, putting 17 of those shots on frame.

In goal, Witte made eight saves to earn the win.

The victory puts the Redhawks at 4-10-2 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference.

Up next is their final conference game of the season as they visit Mercy College on Sunday for a 1pm game.
