ROCHESTER, N.Y. (March 2, 2013) – The Women's Basketball team picked up a thrilling 58-57 win over the No. 23 New York Institute of Technology this afternoon in both teams' season finale.
Sophomore forward
Marissa Sell scored the game-winner with just 20 seconds left on the clock by hitting a jump shot in front of the basket. Sell finished the game with 24 points and 13 rebounds, both were game-highs.
The win marks the first time Roberts Wesleyan has defeated a nationally ranked team at the NCAA Division II level.
Sell was nearly perfect by going 10 of 13 from the field while going 4 of 4 at the free-throw line.
Perhaps the most notable stat in the game was the visitors being unable to hit a three-point shot until the remaining four minutes in the second half.
Marissa Bunce and
Sarah Alwardt each scored eight points for Roberts Wesleyan with Bunce adding a game-high five assits. Alwardt was a perfect 3 of 3 from the field.
As a team, the Redhawks shot 44.0% from the field while the Bears finished the game at 32.4%. The Redhawks also out-rebounded the visitors, 42 to 39.
The win gives the Redhawks an overall record of 14-12 and 8-10 in the East Coast Conference.
Up next for Roberts Wesleyan is the NCCAA East Region game as they host Houghton College this Wednesday at 6pm in the Voller Athletic Center. The winner of the game receives the East Region's automatic bid to the NCCAA National Tournament.
