BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (January 17, 2014) – Poor shooting in the first half doomed the Women's Basketball team as they fell to the University of Bridgeport, 55-54, this evening.
Both teams struggled to score in the first half as the home standing Purple Knights shot a paltry 13.3% from the field while Roberts Wesleyan managed a first-half shooting percentage of just 20.7%.
The Redhawks' shooting improved in the second half, but the visitors were unable to pull away as their largest lead of the game was just nine points at the 15:04 mark in the second half.
In the final minute, the visitors failed to seal the road win when
Chelsea Sanders missed two free-throws as Roberts Wesleyan led 54-51 with 35 seconds left on the clock.
Bridgeport, who scored the final six points of the game, took the lead with two ticks remaining when Aziza Patterson made a layup.Â
For the Redhawks, freshman
Emily Piacentini scored 10 points after going 3 of 3 from long range. All of her scoring came in the first half over just 16 minutes of play.
Both
Marissa Sell and
Samantha Courtney each added nine points as Courtney recorded a game-high 13 rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Lakiah Huff posted a game-high four assists to go along with her seven points.
As a team, Roberts Wesleyan shot 30.4% from the field while holding Bridgeport to just 25.4%.
Bridgeport was led by Aziz Tiara's 19 points while Patterson added 15 points.
The loss puts the Redhawks at 6-7 overall and 2-6 in East Coast Conference play as they search for their first ECC road win of the season.
It is a quick turnaround Roberts Wesleyan as they travel to Long Island to take on Dowling College tomorrow afternoon with tip-off slated for 2pm.
