ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 4, 2014) – What a difference a half makes? After trailing No. 3 Geneseo, 35-19, at halftime, Roberts Wesleyan stormed back in the second half and overtime to punch their ticket to the Wendy's College Classic final.
No. 2 Roberts Wesleyan came to life in the second half as they battled back from a 20-point deficit late in the first half. After chipping away at the Knights' lead, the Redhawks went on a 12-2 run at the end of regulation, which was capped off by a buzzer-beating jump shot from
Brooke Fields to tie the game at 62.
In overtime, it was the Redhawks who kept the momentum in their favor as they out-scored Geneseo, 5-2, in the extra session.
The two halves were like night and day for Roberts Wesleyan. After shooting just 27.6% from the field and 10% from beyond the arc in the first half, the Redhawks managed to shoot 44.1% from the field and 41.7% from long range in the second half.
Individually, three players scored in double-digits for Roberts Wesleyan.
Leading the way was
Samantha Courtney, who shot 50% from the field to finish with 17 points as well as blocking five shots and grabbing six rebounds.
Senior forward
Marissa Sell came off the bench to post her third-consecutive double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sell was a perfect 4 of 4 from the charity stripe.
Freshman guard
Necedah James scored 12 points for Roberts Wesleyan.
For the Knights, Dana Cohan put up a game-high 21 points after going 9 of 12 from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range.
The win is the second against Geneseo in as many tries for the Redhawks. Last year, Roberts Wesleyan edged the Knights, 44-41 in the Wendy's title game.
Up next is a meeting with Rochester this Saturday inside Clark Gymnasium on the campus of RIT. It is the Redhawks' fourth trip to the Wendy's College Classic final in five years.
