WINONA LAKE, Ind. (March 20, 2014) – Despite a 30-point performance from
Chelsea Sanders, the Women's Basketball team fell to top-seeded Lee (Tenn.), 72-70, in the NCCAA National Championships semifinals.
Sanders guided the fifth-seeded Redhawks by going 9 of 16 from the field, 1 of 3 from beyond the arc, and 11 of 16 at the free-throw line. The senior forward added five assists and two steals.
Roberts Wesleyan played the Flames close throughout the game as Lee's largest lead was just eight points early in the second half.
In the waning moments,
Marissa Sell put the Redhawks ahead with just 46 seconds left with a jump shot. However, missed opportunities combined with a two field goals from Lee in the final seconds would give the higher seed the win.
With 25 ticks left, Lee's Jenna Adams made a jumper to tie the game at 70-70 before Karley Miller gave the Flames the lead with nine seconds left.
Joining Sanders in double-digit scoring was junior
Marissa Sell. The forward shot 50 percent from the field to score 18 points in addition to hauling in 10 rebounds for the Redhawks.
Freshman guard
Imani Pierce added seven points coming off the bench after scoring a season-high 10 points in yesterday's win over Oklahoma Christian.
The loss sends Roberts Wesleyan to the third place game, which will be played on Saturday at 10am.
