Track and Field Competes in Highlander Open

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (January 24, 2015) - The Track & Field teams competed this morning in the Highlander Open, which was the first collegiate track & field event held at Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse. Several athletes were able to place in the top five record for the Redhawks at the meet.

In the men's competition, Hayden Jurius placed second in the Shot Put with a throw of 13.38m, which puts him fouth all-time for the Redhakws in that event. Jurius also won the Weight Throw, throwing 13.15m.

Other key finishers for the Redhawks were Jared Gonzalez, who placed second in the 60m with a time of 7.31 seconds while Aaron McGinnis finished first in the long jump with 6.85m. Senior sprinter/jumper Gabe Rivera also finished second in the 400m with a time of 51.95 seconds.

The Women's team also took top spots in several events as senior thrower Victoria Houser placed second in the weight throw with a distanse of 14.03m.
The Redhawks also took first and second in the Pole Vault with Kasey Semmler and Hope Olsen taking the top two spots.

Chelsea Hayward came in first for the 200m (27.05) and second in the 400m (1:00.73). Her time for the 400m dash sets a new program record. This is now the freshman's third school record in just four meets.

The Women's 4x200m Relay team also took first place while earning the fifth best result in the program record books with their winning time of 1:51.48. The winning members were Danielle Budd, Heidi Riegel, Brianna Calderon and Chelsea Hayward as the anchor.

The Redhawks will hit the road this coming weekend for the NCAA Division II Challenge at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
