Women's Basketball Overcomes First Half Deficit to Defeat Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team had to overcome a 13 point second half deficit on the road against Mansfield on Wednesday to pick up their third win of the season in a 74-63 victory.

With 5:20 left in the third quarter a three pointer by Mansfield gave the host team their largest lead of the game, 48-37, but the Redhawks wouldn't go away as they were able to knot the score at 55-55 by the end of the quarter. During that stretch sophomore Sara Nady played a huge role, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points including two three-point buckets. The guard also hit the two free throws at the end of the quarter to tie the score.

In the fourth quarter the Redhawks took the lead on the first made basket and soared to the win from there holding Mansfield to just eight total points in the quarter.

"I was really proud of how we kept our composure and overcame the 13 point deficit," said head coach Gary Andrews. "Tashayla and Saso gave us some great minutes off the bench and we were able to find a way to get a win on the road."

Nady was 5-of-9 from the field for her 19 points along with four made three pointers. She was also 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Sophomore Tashayla Sutorius scored 11 points and had four rebounds in 16 minutes of action. Senior guard Necedah James finished with 12 points and three assists.

The Redhawks shot over 45-percent from the field on 28-of-62 shooting. In the first half Roberts was just 30-percent from the field, but solid second half play saw the Redhawks shoot 62-percent.

Leading the way for Mansfield was senior forward Brielle Kelly who had 17 points and eight rebounds.

Next up for the Redhawks is a home game on Saturday against the 6-0 Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans. This will be the first East Coast Conference matchup of the season for both teams. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. in the Voller Athletic Center.
