Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Rolls Past UDC for First ECC Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Emily Miller posted her third double-double of the season and tied her season-high for points with 23 to lead the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team to an 82-62 win over East Coast Conference opponent University of the District of Columbia on Friday.

The Redhawks set the tempo early on by jumping out to a 12-0 lead to begin the game. Sophomore guard Sara Nady opened the game with a three pointer and hit another one just a minute and a half later to put Roberts up ten. Nady finished the game with a career-high 22 points. The Cairo, Egypt native also had seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals playing a pivotal role in the win.

Despite 14 first half turnovers the Firebirds looked to freshman Dajea Quick to keep the team in the game. The 5-foot-4 guard scored 16 points in the first half and helped UDC take a one point lead after draining a three with 8:20 left in the second quarter. It was the only lead the Firebirds would hold for the remainder of the game as the Redhawks locked down on defense led by the fiery play of junior Taylor Bynoe. The guard posted five steals in the game while also contributing 13 points on the offensive end.

In the second half the Redhawks began to expand their lead making it a double digit margin by the end of the third quarter. Miller and Nady combined to score over half the team's 40 second half points. Many of those points for Miller came from the free throw line where she was 10-for-10 in the second half and 12-of-13 in the game.

Roberts was 23-of-62 (37.1%) from the field in the game while UDC was 21-of-54 (38.9%). 22 total turnovers by the Firebirds led to 28 points for the Redhawks.

The win marks the first ECC victory of the season for Roberts after the team lost its conference opener to Saint Thomas Aquinas just one week ago. Roberts Wesleyan is now 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. Next up for Roberts is a non-conference matchup on Monday against Stonehill College. The game is slated for 6 p.m. in the Voller Athletic Center.
