BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – It was a historic season for the Roberts Wesleyan women's lacrosse team. The team made the East Coast Conference Championships for the first time in program history despite several injuries to key players on the team. But the season came to an end Thursday afternoon in the semifinal match where the Redhawks fell to No. 1 LIU Post, 18-2.
Â
Scoring for the Redhawks was
Johannah Price in the first half with 2:47 on the clock and
Mackenzie Kidder in the second half with 13 minutes remaining. Senior
Shannon Knapp made seven saves in net.
Â
The tournament's No. 1 ranked team in LIU Post is also the No. 5 team in the country. The Pioneers were led by Alexis Newman's five goals. LIU Post will move on to face Mercy College in the ECC Championship game.
Â
Roberts finishes the season with a 7-11 overall record. The team is graduating five seniors including the programs all-time leading scorer in
Cassley Jackowski, goalkeeper
Shannon Knapp who made over 500 saves in her career, experienced defenders in
Christina Hart and
Alicia Sinicropi, and talented midfielder
Amanda Cluck who suffered an ACL injury part-way through the season.
Â
Despite the loss to a top-ranked team, the women's lacrosse team's ECC playoff berth marks a step in the right direction for the program, and they will look to carry that momentum into the 2018 season.
