ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The match went down to the wire Sunday as the visiting Salem University women's tennis team edged the Redhawks 4-3 in a non-conference game played on the RWC courts.
Salem took a 1-0 lead when they prevailed at both first and second doubles. The Redhawks'
Marousia Bosch and
Laura Freeman won at third doubles by a 6-0 score.
Salem took a 2-0 lead when Karolina Glowinska won in straight sets over the
Bijisha Shrestha at 4
th singles. Freeman and Bosch again rose to the occasion as Freeman defeated Shelby Turpin 6-0, 6-0 at 5
th singles and Bosch evened the match at two apiece with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kristina Vuksanovic at 3
rd singles.
Junior
Salome Darsalia gave the Redhawks their first lead of the match when she defeated Brianna Vasquez 6-0, 7-5 at 6
th singles. However, Salem University won the two remaining matches to take the match. They tied the score at three apiece when Julia Kunic defeated
Nthabi Mogopodi 6-4, 6-1 at first singles and sealed the hard fought victory when Julia Piatek defeated
Andrea Gallardo 6-1, 6-3 at 2
nd singles.
"Salem just would not let us take control," said head coach
Tom Linhart. "I felt we played inconsistently and had our chances, but could not get the key points when they presented themselves. Getting the doubles point is key, and we have struggled with that, so you know we will continue to work hard to remedy that weakness."
The 6-3 Redhawks are off for a week and travel to Long Island for conference matches against LIU Post and NYIT.
