SHEPERDSTOWN, W.Va. – It took three overtime periods to decide a winner but the Roberts Wesleyan women's lacrosse team won in thrilling fashion to pick up its first victory of the young season. Freshman
Emily Tomei's scored the game winning goal with one second to go in the third overtime to lift the Redhawks over Shepherd University, 13-12.
The Redhawks spend most of the game trying to play catchup on the scoreboard to the Rams who built a 5-1 advantage in the first half. But Roberts was able to take its first lead of the game in the second half when
Alyssa Maxwell's goal at the 7:41 mark gave the Redhawks a 10-9 lead. Shepherd answered with three straight goals to go up 12-10, but goals by
Megan Burnham and Maxwell to close out the game tied the score and sent the game into overtime. Maxwell's game tying goal came with just two seconds left in regulation.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first two overtimes but Tomei's shot hit the back of the net as time expired in the third extra period. It was the freshman's third goal of the season.
Johannah Price and Maxwell led the Redhawks with four goals each.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game with the Redhawks getting off 35 shots and the Rams firing off 31 total shots.
Goalkeeper
Victoria Greco had 15 saves in net while Casey Hickman came up with 12 totals saves for the hosts.
On Monday the Redhawks will take on Shippensburg University. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
