Men's Soccer Draws with Cal U

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team competed for 110 minutes on Wednesday evening against California University of Pennsylvania, but a winner couldn't be decided as the Redhawks and Vulcans ended in a 1-1 draw.

Both goals were scored early in the first half with Johanz Tusiime getting the Redhawks on the board first in the 13th minute off the feed from Terrell Spencer. Tusiime ran on to a nicely played thru ball from Spencer and took a shot that found the lower left corner of the net.

Cal U knotted the score up just seven minutes later following a free kick that was deflected in by Eric Campbell. The assist was credited to Paul Young, Jr.

The physical second half which totaled 17 fouls saw both teams create chances but goalkeepers Ben Hastings and Joseph Valeriano kept every shot of the net to keep the score level. The Redhawks finished with 19 shots including eight on frame while the Vulcans took 13 shots with seven on target. Valeriano made seven saves for Cal U while Hastings made one save in his half of play. Joe McNulty started in goal for Roberts making five saves in 45 minutes of action.

The Redhawks best chance to sneak away with the win in regulation came with just nine seconds left on the clock. Freshman Dylan Ruiz collected a ball inside the box and took an open shot 15 yards out that was saved by Valeriano.

Neither team was able to produce any threatening opportunities in the overtime periods despite the Redhawks being up a man due to a red card on the Vulcans late in the second half of the game.

Roberts goes to 2-1-2 on the season while Cal U is now 1-0-2.

Next up for the Redhawks is the first East Coast Conference match of the season against NYIT on the road. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Old Westbury, N.Y.
