WALTHAM, MASS. – On Wednesday afternoon, a winner could not be decided between the Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team and Falcons of Bentley University. The game ended in a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.
Both teams battled for possession on each side of the field. In the 31
stminute, the Falcons opened up the scoring after a pass in was deflected off of several players, eventually allowing Ronan Fitzpatrick to fire the ball in the net, making the score line 1-0.
The second half began with aggressive play from both sides. Fast forward late into the game to the 71
stminute, the Redhawks were able to even the score after being fouled inside the box, leading to a penalty kick opportunity to put in the opposing net. Senior midfielder
Daniel Maxwell lined up his shot, scored, and got the Redhawks back into the game. However, regular time would expire and the game would go to overtime.
In both overtime periods, the benches saw plenty of play as each side wanted to have fresh legs in the game to try and take the win. The whistle blew at the end of the second overtime and the final conclusion of the game would be a 1-1 tie.
In regular time and both overtime periods, the Redhawks had a total of 11 shots and managed to get five on goal. Four of these shots came from freshman
Alex Perez Vega. Also, senior goalkeeper
Joe McNulty played the entire game and recorded nine saves.
Next up for the Redhawks is a home opener versus (1-0-1) Stonehill College on Saturday, September 8. The game is scheduled for a 1 PM kickoff.
