EASTON, Mass. – Seven second half goals were scored over the span of a 22 minute stretch on Wednesday evening as the Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team took on Stonehill College, but it was the Redhawks who came out on top 4-3 at the end of 90 minutes.
Sophomore forward
Dylan Ruiz scored the game-winner in the 79th minute off a feed from
Juan Ospina-Betancurt. The final goal by Ruiz was his third of the day to complete the hat trick. It was the first-ever hat trick of his collegiate career.
After a scoreless first half on a rainy day it was Ruiz who opened the scoring floodgates in the 57th minute.
Jaheed Loblack provided the assist. The Skyhawks quickly answered with a goal of their own in the 65th minute followed by another goal in the 71st minute to take a 2-1 lead and take the momentum away from the Redhawks. Brandon Carroll scored the first goal for Stonehill with the second coming from Trevor Tubbs.
Less than a minute later
Alex Perez Vega was pulled down in the box resulting in a penalty kick which was taken and capitalized on by Ruiz for his second goal of the day. The scoreboard read 2-2.
Another foul by the Skyhawks just a few minutes later led to another Redhawks goal in the 73rd minute.
Terrell Spencer's free kick found the foot of
Dan Reger in the box who touched the ball over to Betancurt on the left post who put the ball in the back of the net. The goal put Roberts up 3-2.
The scoring didn't end there as Stonehill fought back to tie the game at 3-3 in the 75th minute. Ian Pereira had the goal.
But the Redhawks had the final say with under 12 minutes to play when Ruiz's goal gave Roberts the edge they needed.
On paper the game finished nearly identical for both teams. Roberts totaled 16 shots and Stonehill had 15. The Skyhawks had eight saves while
Joe McNulty made seven saves for the Redhawks.
Roberts Wesleyan has now won four of their last five games and stand at 4-4-1 on the season. The Redhawks will be back in action at home on Saturday with an East Coast Conference match against Queens College. Kick off time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. following the women's game at 1 p.m.
