BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The No. 5 Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team was unable to move forward in East Coast Conference post season play after losing to No. 4 LIU Post in the first round on Wednesday evening, 74-70.
Emily Miller led all scorers with 22 points while also coming down with nine rebounds. Senior
Taylor Bynoe added 15 points, five rebounds and three steals.
During the regular season the Redhawks and Pioneers split their games against each other with the home team getting the win on their own floor. Most recently, Roberts defeated LIU Post on Feb. 17, 66-61.
Wednesday's first round playoff game had both teams going back-and-forth with 10 lead changes throughout the contest.
Late in the third quarter the Redhawks held a three point lead but back-to-back three pointers by LIU Post gave the Pioneers a 51-48 lead and the momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Roberts was never able to claim the lead back from the Pioneers but stayed in striking distance the entire quarter. With 1:40 left in the game a layup by
Taryn Wilson made the score 66-65, but LIU continually had the answer on the offensive end, connecting on a long range shot by Robyn Francis to extend the lead to four points.
With 19 seconds left in the game LIU Post hit two free throws to hold a six point lead but Bynoe answered with a three pointer to bring it back to a one possession game. Then a turnover by the Pioneers gave Roberts hope but
Tashayla Sutorius's shot missed the mark and LIU was able to knock down a free throw and close the game out.
LIU Post will move on to play No. 1 seed St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
Roberts Wesleyan finishes the season with a 14-15 record.
