Track and Field Takes Top 3 at NCCAA National Championships

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's and women's track and field teams competed at the NCCAA National Championships last week at Grace College in Indiana. The men's team finished in third place with 105 points while the women claimed second overall with 103 points.
 
The men's team had 10 top three finishes including five first place finishes. Five individuals earned national championships in their event.
 
Juniors Christopher Sims and Josiah Ottolini were the top finishers for Roberts each grabbing a pair of wins. Sims won both the 5,000m (15:06.93) and 10,000m (32:31.11). Ottolini took first place in 1,500m (3:58.93) and was a member of the winning 4x800m relay team that finished with a time of 7:43.12. Joining Ottolini on the relay team was Nathan Cannon, James Betts, and Tyler Lipina. Ottolini also added a third place finish in the 800m, crossing the line in 1:57.
 
Betts finished directly behind Ottolini in the 800m placing fourth in 1:57.08. He was also second in the 1,500m (3:59.85).
 
Freshman Shane Pease was second overall in the 5,000m (15:20.81), Justin Shaffer and Anthony Casullo took second and third respectively in the 10,000m. Shaffer posted a time of 33:15.26 and Casullo came in at 33:21.91.
 
Cannon was the other first place finisher for the Redhawks, winning the Steeplechase in 9:37.58.
 
The women's team saw nine top three finishes including two first place finishes.
 
The only individual champion was Moriah Martone who won the steeplechase with a time of 11:59.04. Addison Sgroi took third place in the same event in 12:11.95.
 
The 4x800m relay team of Sgroi, Erin Graham, Abigail Gostomski, and Bailey Gostomski took first place posting a time of 9:18.22.
 
In the sprints sophomore Brianna Randolph had two top three finishes. Randolph took second in the 100m (12.22) and third in the 200m (25.42).
 
Brittany Shumway was second in the 5,000m (18:22.90) and third in the 1,500m (4:59.67) coming in behind Bailey Gostomski who finished second in 4:55.33.
 
Sophomore Ashley Watson took second in the 10,000m crossing the line in 40:11.50.
 
In the heptathalon, Claire Stokes placed fourth scoring 2,918 points.
 
And in the field events, Anna Alquist tied for second overall in pole vault clearing 2.85 meters.
 
The NCCAA Championships marked the end of the outdoor season for the Redhawks.
