OCEAN BREEZE, N.Y. – Both the Roberts Wesleyan indoor track and field teams took second place on Saturday at the East Coast Conference Championships held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
The men's team had the closest of margins to the first place finisher with just a 10.5 point difference. ECC Champions Georgian Court finished with 147.50 points while the Redhawks totaled 134. Georgian Court was also the winner on the women's side with 149 points. Roberts finished with 99 points.
Seniors
Josiah Ottolini and
Christopher Sims led the way for the Redhawks in their final ECC Indoor Championships meet. Ottolini won the 800m (1:56.48) and 1 mile (4:19.95). Sims earned ECC titles in the 3,000m (9:06.26) and 5,000m races. Sims' time of 15:06.54 was a new ECC Championship record.
The Redhawks dominated the distance events claiming six of the top 10 spots in the mile.
Connor Demo and Nathan Cannon took second and third in the mile. In the 3,000m Roberts grabbed the top five places and in the 5,000m the Redhawks finished one through four.
Connor Demo joined Ottolini as a top finisher in the 800m and mile with a second place finishes, crossing the line in 1:57.03 for the 800m and 4:21.89 in the mile.
The men's distance medley team of Tyler Lipina,
Matthew Wottawa,
Zakariah Jantzi, and
James Betts took second overall with a time of 10:24.89.
Paul Dunbar's clearance of 4.55 meters in pole vault was good for first place and an ECC title.
The women also found success in the distance events led by
Michaela Bierly. The senior won the 3,000m with a time of 10:45.37 and the 5,000 posting a time of 18:25.23. Bierly was joined by several other Redhawks in the same races with top finishes. The 3,000m featured six of the top seven finishers coming from Roberts Wesleyan.
Brittany Shumway was the second place finisher in the event (10:47.70).
Other ECC title winners were
Abigail Gostomski and
Bailey Gostomski. Abigail won the 800m in dominating fashion crossing the line in 2:16.70 while Bailey won the mile in 5:06.84. The distance medley team claimed first place with a time of 13:24.51. On that team was
Erin Graham,
Katie Bellomo,
Maya Pelayo, and
Moriah Martone.
Graham also took second in the 1,000m race with a time of 3:08.40.
Roberts Wesleyan concludes its indoor season and will be back in action on March 20
th for the start of outdoor season at the 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte University.
