Women's Bowling Kicks Off Season On Positive Note

The Roberts Wesleyan College Women's Bowling team returned to the lanes on Thursday evening in their first event of the season, a four-team dual competition hosted by Medaille College, where the Redhawks competed in a Baker Total Pinfall Match against D'Youville, Daemen, and Medaille College.

Roberts started the night against D'Youville College, falling behind early in the match after a slow start to game one (125-156). The Redhawks quickly regained their composure to overcome the deficit, heading into the fifth and final game trailing the Saints by just six pins. Senior Kayla Kawyn and freshman Mykenzie Burnett led the way to victory, each striking in their two baker frames to help Roberts finish with a 211 and claim a win in their first match (880-838).

Next up, Roberts faced Daemen College. Off to a fast start in the first two games, the Redhawks were clean 19 out of 20 frames for games of (215 and 245) and a 139-pin lead over the Wildcats. However, Daemen responded quickly in the third and fourth games, defeating Roberts (218-179) and (240-179). The Redhawks went into the final game leading by 39 pins, and although they fell slightly (185-203), they were still able to capture the win (1,003-982).

For the final match of the night, the Redhawks were up against Medaille College, ranked #10 in the NTCA DII/DIII Preseason Poll. Roberts fell slightly after game one (178-189) but regrouped in game two (222-203) to take an eight-pin lead. In the third game, Medaille cut the lead even further by winning (193-190) but the Redhawks bounced back (170-144). In the final game, Roberts finished strong with (214-225), enough to claim the match (974-954).

Kayla Kawyn led the team with (20.89) pins per frame average. Senior Sarah Gerken was also key in the victory, with 29 out of 30 clean frames for a (20.51) pins per frame average. Mykenzie Burnett had a strong first performance for the team, showcasing a solid (20.1) pins per frame average. Freshmen Paige Barkley and Hayley Kephart also had great debuts for the Redhawks.

Roberts returned to action on Sunday, Feb. 21 with a dual meet against Daemen. Despite beating the Wildcats just a few days prior the Redhawks fell to Daemen, 866-818.

Roberts now prepares for the East Coast Conference Championships set to take place on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27.
