CLOSING RUN CARRIES UNBEATEN REDHAWKS OVER MOLLOY

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Roberts Wesleyan women's lacrosse team closed the second half with a 6-1 run to power its way past visiting Molloy College, 16-9, in an East Coast Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The Redhawks (9-0, 5-0 ECC) took an 8-3 lead into halftime, but a 5-2 run by the Lions narrowed the gap to 10-8 before Roberts responded with the deciding spurt.

Senior Taylor Nathan ignited the surge by converting a feed from junior Kelsey Simmons with 13:11 remaining. Senior Emily Tomei scored off an assist from Madison Bell 32 seconds later and Simmons scored on a free position shot for a 13-8 lead with 11:12 left.

Graduate student Jessica Giancursio added a man-down goal with 8:52 remaining and Bell scored her team-leading 37th goal of the season with 6:29 to play. Molloy found the net with 4:30 to play, but Nathan completed the scoring with a man-up, free-position goal with 23 seconds remaining.

Bell finished with five goals and an assist, Tomei scored four goals and Nathan added three.

Lindsey Brinkel contributed a goal and two assists while Simmons and Ellen O'Neil each finished with a goal and an assist.

Giancursio and defender Tiffany Melendez each scooped four ground balls to lead the Redhawks. Junior Natalie Arieno made 13 saves for Roberts.

Roberts also closed the first half strong, scoring the final three goals in the last 7:09. Bell scored twice in a run that was capped by Nathan's goal with 1:43 remaining before intermission.

Tomei and Bell each scored three times in the first half. Arieno stopped eight of the 11 shots she faced in the first.

The Redhawks outshot the Lions 32-27 and were successful on 22 of 27 clears in the game.

Roberts will host Grand Valley State at 5 p.m. Thursday in a showdown of ranked teams. The Lakers, who are ranked No. 8 in the IWCLA poll and 11th in the U.S. Lacrosse poll, play at Northern Michigan on Sunday before traveling to Rochester later in the week.
