AMHERST, N.Y. – Patience and persistence paid off for the Roberts Wesleyan College men's soccer team on Wednesday.
Alex Perez Vega and
Johanz Tusiime scored second-half goals as the Redhawks blanked host Daemen College 2-0 for their first East Coast Conference victory of the fall.
"We made some changes in the second half to generate some offense and it paid off for us," Roberts coach
Scott Reber said.
Perez Vega sent a direct kick into the top right corner for his second goal of the season to give the Redhawks (3-4-1, 1-1-1 ECC) a 1-0 advantage in the 79
th minute and Tusiime finished off a nifty combination play from
Dylan Ruiz and
Ryan Curtis in the final minute to put the game away.
Roberts put six of its 15 shots on net and
Jared Gibbons made one save for the shutout. The victory ended a three-game winless streak and gives the Redhawks a shot in the arm as they dive into the heart of conference play.
"It's given us some confidence and I think that was one of the missing pieces for us," Reber said. "Guys are starting to believe in the game plan and believe in themselves."
