FLUSHING, N.Y. – Senior center
Dimitra Gkizani and junior guard
Ashlynn McKnight both recorded career-high point totals as the Roberts Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled to its third straight win, a 78-62 victory over East Coast Conference foe Queens College on Friday.
"Nothing is sweeter than winning on the road," Roberts coach
Kevin Clifford said. "We had great minutes from a lot of players and it was a team effort on defense. Our defense created our offense."
Gkizani notched her second double-double in three games, scoring a career-high 25 points and pulling down 17 rebounds while McKnight connected on 4 of her 6 three-point attempts and finished with 14 points. Sophomore
Toni Neely-Primus added 11 points in a balanced scoring effort for Roberts (7-5, 4-2 ECC).
The Redhawks used a dominant second quarter, outscoring Queens 25-10, to build a 43-28 halftime lead. McKnight and
Nyah Johnson both came off the bench to score six points in the second.
"I thought that Nyah and Ashlynn really gave us a spark there," Clifford said.
Gkizani scored nine points and pulled down nine rebounds in the first half as Roberts shot 55.2 percent from the field and outscored Queens 22-10 in the paint in the first 20 minutes. McKnight scored nine first-half points, all on three 3-pointers, and Neely-Primus scored seven, all in the first quarter.
Sophomore guard
Danielle DiCintio dished out 10 assists, including seven in the first half, for the Redhawks. Senior guard
Taryn Wilson contributed nine points and sophomore guard
Georgia Haverlock scored eight.
"We have a lot of weapons," Clifford said. "When we are playing team basketball and sharing the ball we are tough to guard."
Roberts outscored Queens 38-18 in the paint and tallied 23 points off turnovers in the game.
Roberts, which led 43-28 at the break, scored the first seven points of the second half to build a 22-point advantage. The Redhawks led 58-43 after three quarters and held the lead for 38:11 of the game's 40 minutes.
Roberts returns to action at Molloy College at noon on Sunday.
