QUEENS, N.Y. - The Roberts women's basketball team rallied back from a 10 point deficit late in the fourth quarter to give Queens College a scare, but the Knights were able to hold on long enough to get the win, 61-58.
Â
With 2:54 remaining in the game Roberts was staring at a 54-44 disadvantage and after a difficult shooting night the team needed a spark to fight its way back into the contest. The Redhawks found that on back-to-back possessions when junior
Georgia Haverlock grabbed two consecutive steals which led to a five point swing for Roberts. Haverlock had the first bucket on a fast break layup followed by a
Paris Anthony three pointer on the next trip down the floor.
Â
The Redhawks cut the lead to four points following a Haverlock jumper with 10 seconds left, and Anthony hit a last second layup but it wasn't enough to top the Knights.
Â
"What hurt us was the rebounding and missing some layups that we should have made," said head coach Kevin Clifford. " But I'm proud of the effort, the fight in coming back and the scrappiness. We are inexperienced and learning how to win, but we are close. We are really becoming a team."
Â
Haverlock led the team with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. The guard also had three assists and four steals.
Â
Anthony had her best scoring game as a Redhawk with 11 points in 28 minutes of action
Â
Queens was led almost entirely by Chelsea Reeves who finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds. 13 of Reeve's points came from the charity stripe.
Â
Roberts falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-1 in East Coast Conference play.
Â
The team will be back in action again on Sunday against Molloy. Tip time is set for noon.
