Wilson Passes 1,000-Point Milestone; Gkizani Posts Double-Double As Redhawks Edge CSI

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Winning close games is becoming a habit for the Roberts Wesleyan College women's basketball team.
Sophomore guard Toni Neely-Primus sank the decisive free throw with six seconds remaining as the Redhawks won their third one-possession game in five days, defeating the College of Staten Island 60-59 in an East Coast Conference game Thursday at the Voller Athletic Center.
"I think that winning these games gives us confidence, but there are also things that we can improve on," Roberts coach Kevin Clifford said. "We just have that refuse-to-lose attitude and are really showing that will to win right now."
The Redhawks defeated the University of the District of Columbia 64-62 on Sunday and outlasted Queens College 67-64 in overtime on Wednesday.
Senior center Dimitra Gkizani led Roberts (13-9, 10-6 ECC) with 17 points and 13 rebounds while notching her fifth straight double-double.
"She's playing strong, she's playing with confidence and she is going straight up to the basket," Clifford said.
Senior captain Taryn Wilson also recorded a milestone, converting an offensive rebound for a basket to score her 1,000th career point with 6:02 to play in the first half.
"She has had a great career here," Clifford said of Wilson. "Taryn has been a hard worker, a two-year captain and has gotten better every year.
Neely-Primus finished with 15 points while sophomore guard Georgia Haverlock 10 points. Sophomore point guard Danielle DiCintio scored six points on a pair of crucial 3-pointers and also distributed 10 assists while finishing with zero turnovers in 31 minutes.
"I thought Dani DiCintio was kind of a game-changer tonight," Clifford said.
After the teams played to a 23-23 tie at the half, Roberts came out strong and outscored CSI 28-17 in the third quarter. The Redhawks took a 14-point lead on a layup by Haverlock with 11 seconds remaining in the third before CSI rallied.
Gkizani made two free throws to give Roberts a 59-56 lead with 29 seconds left, but the Dolphins tied the game six seconds later. Neely-Primus was fouled with 6 seconds left and converted her second free throw to put the Redhawks back in front.
"She is clutch," Clifford said.
CSI missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.
The victory avenges a 66-49 loss to CSI on Feb. 9 and sends Roberts into its regular-season home finale on a roll. The Redhawks will host ECC rival Molloy College on Senior Day at 2 p.m. Saturday.
