AMHERST, N.Y. – A slow first half plagued the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team in Saturday afternoon's East Coast Conference Semifinal loss to No. 1 seeded Daemen. The Redhawks lost 84-62.
Daemen capitalized on the Redhawks' poor shooting in the first half. Roberts was 9-of-27 (33.3%) from the field and 2-of-11 (18.2%) from beyond the arc. The Wildcats built a 21 point lead at the halftime break.
Roberts continued to fight in the second half and fared better shooting the ball, going 13-of-25 (52%) from the field and 8-of-12 (66.7%) from 3-point range. The Redhawks were able to cut the Daemen lead from 25 to 11 points midway through the fourth quarter.
"I'm proud of the effort, I'm proud of the toughness, I'm proud of them following the game plan in the second half," said head coach
Kevin Clifford. "We played them pretty even in the second half."
Sophomore
Danielle DiCintio had a big second half scoring all 12 of her points by hitting four shots from deep range.
Georgia Haverlock,
Toni Neely-Primus, and Wilson joined DiCintio with at least one 3-pointer in the half.
After cutting the lead down to 11 in the fourth Daemen pushed the game out of reach with a 12-0 run to build its advantage back to 23 points.
Haverlock led the Redhawks with 15 points.
In their final ECC matchup, senior
Dimitra Gkizani finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal. Wilson scored 11 with 5 rebounds and 3 steals and
Maia Wong dropped in two points in a couple minutes of action.
"The first two words I said when I went in after the game was, thank you," Clifford said. "For dealing with me and dealing with a long season. They're great teammates, great people and great leaders."
Roberts finishes the season 14-12 and will await an opportunity to play in the NCCAA National Tournament.
