ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team bui t an early lead, but could not fend off a late comeback by Mercy College in an East Coast Conference game on Saturday.
Roberts (8-5, 4-1 ECC) jumped to a 5-1 lead in the opening 9:14, but Mercy (9-4, 4-0 ECC) outscored the Redhawks 6-1 in the game's final 17:28 to secure a 14-11 victory. Roberts led 5-3 after the first quarter and 7-5 at the half. Mercy rallied to tie the game at 10 after three quarters and outscored the Redhawks 4-1 in the final period.
"They did a good job of getting us out of our game," Roberts coach
Kristin Paolini said. "That first half was our game, that second half was not our game."
Senior attack
Lindsey Brinkel led Roberts with three goals and two assists and senior
Madison Bell finished with four points with a goal and three assists. Seniors
Alexis Grant and
Ellen O'Neil each contributed two goals and an assist.
Freshman
Emma Blumenstock recorded a goal and an assist and junior
Caitlin Harding and sophomore
Sophia Podszebka each added a goal. Podszebka also registered a game-high 14 draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper
Natalie Arieno was strong in the cage with 14 saves.
Roberts will honor its six graduating seniors at noon on Saturday at Redhawks Field.
The regularly scheduled game with the University of the District of Columbia has been canceled and Roberts has been awarded a victory. The Redhawks will host an ECC Tournament semifinal game next week.
Roberts won the ECC Tournament for the first time in 2021 and advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four.
