DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – In a rematch of last year's East Coast Conference Championship final the Roberts Wesleyan women's lacrosse team fell to No. 1 Mercy College, 19-12 on Saturday afternoon.
The Redhawks finish the season with a 9-6 record.
"I'm really proud of this team," said head coach
Kristin Paolini. "Of course we would have loved to be ECC champions. I don't think many people expected us to have as much success this year, so I am glad for what the team accomplished."
Roberts was unable to capture the lead at any point during the afternoon. The Redhawks tied the game on two occasions, but Mercy provided the answer each time.
Midway through the second quarter the Mavericks used a five goal run to take a 9-4 lead. Seniors
Madison Bell and
Lindsey Brinkel, the team's leading point scorers, attempted to bring life back to the Redhawks on the comeback trail. The duo connected on three straight goals where both players were involved with either the assist or the goal.
Bell finished with six goals and three assists and Brinkel had four goals and four assists.
Alexis Grant also found the back of the net two times and added in an assist.
Natalie Arieno made 10 saves, caused two turnovers and had four ground balls.
On defense,
Madelyn Robinson and
Caitlin Tucker each had four caused turnovers.
With back-to-back trips to the finals, the Redhawks have set a standard for the future of the program.
"It's become an expectation to make it to the finals of the ECC," Paolini said. "It's no longer the goal to just make the tournament. For next year and the future, we expect to make the finals and be competitive in the finals. We also want to look beyond the ECC tournament. We've set the foundation for this program and we expect and hope for a lot of success moving forward."
