COLCHESTER,  VT. – The Roberts Wesleyan College men's soccer team received goals from three different players and battled through extreme humidity to defeat host Saint Michael's College 3-0 in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon.
"We grinded it out today and got the result, which is what you need to do," Roberts coach
Scott Reber said.
Roberts (1-1) took an early lead as junior
Tamas Nagy made a nice run to the top of the box before sliding a pass to senior
Alex Perez Vega, who buried his first goal of the season in the sixth minute.
"Tamas put the ball through to Alex and Alex had a beautiful finish," Reber said. "I think that gave us some confidence."
Roberts caught a break on its second goal as the ball bounced off the head of a Saint Michael's defender and went directly to Nagy, who chipped it in to an empty net from the top of the box in the 55
th minute.
The Purple Knights had a chance to draw closer after being awarded a penalty kick in the 62
nd minute, but Roberts keeper
Jared Gibbons made a diving save with his right hand and
Hunter Salisbury blocked the rebound to thwart the opportunity.
"That's a huge stop," Reber said. "The fact that Jared came up with the big save right there and with Hunter throwing himself in front of the rebound, that's a big shift."
Senior
Dylan Ruiz closed the scoring on a blast from the top of the 18-yard box in the 65
th minute. Senior
Ollie Ardle started the play with a nifty pass through Nagy's legs to set things up for Ruiz, who went bar down for his 51
st career goal as a Redhawk.
Gibbons made six saves.
Roberts will play its third game in six days when it hosts Walsh University at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
