KENMORE, N.Y. - The women's bowling team traveled to Kenmore, N.Y., on November 4-5, 2023, to take part in the Brunswick Fall Classic hosted by Niagara University. The format consisted of five traditional matches, followed by four total pinfall baker matches, and ending with a best-4-of-7 baker match play to determine the final standings. The tournament was held on a 41-foot, 25.5mL sport pattern. The field consisted of Niagara University (D1), Mount St. Mary's (D1), Bryant University (D1), Mercyhurst University (D2), D'Youville University (D2), University of Pitt-Bradford (D3), Hilbert College (D3), and William Smith College (D3).
During the opening day of traditional team matches, the Redhawks struggled early with spare-shooting and dropped the first two matches against Pitt-Bradford (728-728, tiebreak 77-86) and Bryant (783-1,000). In Round 3, the ladies faced the nation's #16 ranked team Mercyhurst, defeating them by a score of 914-898. Although their improvement continued, the women dropped their last match of the day to D'Youville (895-970).
On day two, the ladies made a huge turnaround in the baker total pinfall matches, averaging 182.9 as a team. The ladies started out against Niagara, and even though they held the early lead, the Purple Eagles clinched the win, with the Redhawks losing narrowly by a score of 845-864. In the next round, the women faced the nation's #18 ranked team Mount St. Mary's. The Redhawks had the early lead once again, but the Mountaineers pulled away in the last game of the set 247-185, and Roberts lost by a score of 967-1,014. In the final two matches, the ladies continued to bowl impressively, easily taking down William Smith (957-824) and Hilbert (903-717).
After the qualifying rounds were finished, the ladies were paired against William Smith for the final best 4-of-7 baker match play round. The Redhawks dropped the first game (146-153) but continued to battle back in the series (192-167, 177-164, 168-200, 193-138, 156-151) to win by a score of 4-2. Overall, the ladies finished 5
th in the event, with Niagara and Mount St. Mary's claiming first and second place respectively.
Leading the ladies overall for the weekend was senior
Mykenzie Burnett, averaging 181.9 and competing in 100% of the frames. Sophomore
Amelia Ponto tallied a 189.1 average for the weekend, competing in 84% of the frames. Freshman
Abigail Barnard also had a great showing, averaging 184.4 for the weekend and competing in 80% of the frames.
The Redhawks overall record is 16-11; they are back on the road this weekend, competing in the Daemen Fall Classic on November 11-12, 2023, in Lockport, NY.
