HICKORY, N.C. – In the final game of the North Carolina road trip, Roberts Wesleyan's defense showed up in a big way. The Redhawks held Lenoir-Rhyne, who is receiving votes in the IWLCA national poll, to its lowest scoring output of the season, winning 13-4.
Roberts held the Bears scoreless in the first half while the Redhawks' offense scored 10 straight goals before conceding their first goal of the game mid-way through the third quarter.
The defense held Lenoir-Rhyne to only 11 total shots in the entire game. LR had been averaging 20 shots per game in their first three games of the season. The Redhawks finished the game with 13 caused turnovers while forcing the hosts into 23 total turnovers. Roberts had 29 total shots with 21 of those shots on frame.
"It was a really good game for the girls to believe in themselves," said head coach
Kristin Paolini. "We will have tough games going forward but this was a good win for the team to see that they can put together a great performance."
Leading the scoring for the Redhawks was
Annie Mulhall with five goals. The sophomore had 13 total shots.
Emma Blumenstock found the back of the net four times for the second-highest scoring effort of her career. The sophomore's game-high was five goals scored last season against Bridgeport.
Tannah O'Neill-Blake had a career-high in points with four on one goal and three assists.
Roberts (2-1) will head back home to Rochester for a Friday evening matchup with Gannon University. The first draw is slated for 5 p.m.
