BUFFALO, N.Y. - The women's bowling team traveled to Buffalo, N.Y. on February 25-26, 2023, to compete in the Medaille Classic Tournament, hosted by Medaille University. The format consisted of five traditional matches and three baker total pinfall matches to determine seeds, then two matchplay rounds to determine the championship winner. The 7-team field featured three of the nation's top-ranked programs with Mercyhurst University (#14), Mount St. Mary's University (#18), and Medaille University (#19).
On opening day, the ladies got off to a great start with a win over Hilbert College (827-665). Leading the way in that first match was junior Paige Barkley with a solid 202 game. In match two, the Redhawks faced the nation's #19 ranked team, Medaille University, losing 778-1003. However, the ladies bounced back in the third match when they went up against Mount St. Mary's University, who is currently ranked #18 in the nation. Roberts edged out The Mount 898-882; junior Mykenzie Burnett added a huge 233 game to secure the win in the final frame. In match four, the ladies kept the momentum going, bringing in another victory over D'Youville University (813-791). In the last match of the day, the ladies faced #14 ranked Mercyhurst University, losing 839-944.
On day two, Roberts secured a great win over the University of Pitt-Bradford (846-687), before falling to Mercyhurst by a narrow margin (869-896). The ladies were then placed in the bottom bracket for teams qualifying in 5th-8th place. As the top team in the bracket, the Redhawks earned a bye their first round and faced off against Hilbert in the final matchplay round of the day. Roberts was able to win easily by a score of 4-1, securing 5th place for the tournament.
Mercyhurst University would go on to claim the championship, while Mount St. Mary's finished in second place.
Leading the Redhawks for the weekend was Paige Barkley with an 181.0 game average. Mykenzie Burnett added a 172.2 game average, while sophomore Luz Torres chipped in with a 171.5 game average.
The ladies prepare for the Mounties Roundup on March 4-5, 2023, hosted by Mount Aloysius College in Altoona, PA, as they look to improve their 19-25 record.
