Sunday Rally Gives Bowling a 12th Place Finish at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Roberts Wesleyan University Bowling team scored a pair of wins Sunday to move up the standings and finish with a 12th place overall standing at the season-opening Penguin Classic Tournament.

The Redhawks (4-9 overall) recorded single wins on Friday in the Baker format competition and Saturday in the traditional scoring format and played Lewis University in the first match of the Sunday head-to-head position rounds.

Against Lewis, Roberts won the first three games of the best-of-seven format but Lewis rallied for a pair of wins before the Redhawks finished the match with a 193-178 win in the sixth game to advance.

Roberts fell in the first three games of the next match against Morgan State University but rallied for four straight wins to move on to the match for 11th place. In the fifth game, the Redhawks capped the game with three straight strikes in the 10th frame to pull away and close the gap to 3-2. In the sixth game, Roberts started with three consecutive strikes and finished with a strike in the ninth frame and another three -strike 10th frame to event the score at 3-3.

In the seventh game, The Redhawks rolled a mark in each frame including a strike in the ninth and two strikes in the 10th to close out the match.

In the 11th-place match against Mercyhurst University, the Lakers took a 4-1 victory and Roberts placed 12th overall.

For the weekend, junior Amelia Ponto led Roberts as she placed 18th in the individual bowler standings with an average score of 201.60. Freshman Kaylee Stephens finished 34th overall with an average of 189.20, senior Angelica Polcini was 45th with an average score of 175.20, fellow senior Luz Torres took 64th place with her average of 156.25, senior Danielle Jaeger in 67th with her average of 147.75 and sophomore Abigail Barnard was 93rd with an average of 138.0.

Roberts will be back in action November 2nd and 3rd at the Brunswick Fall Open at Niagara University.
