ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team went undefeated during the month of April, winning its five games by an average score of 18-5.
Junior captain
Emma Blumenstock played a huge role in the Redhawks' success, contributing 17 goals and 24 assists during the month. She was named East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week four times in April as Roberts finished unbeaten in East Coast Conference play for the first time in program history.
Blumenstock also tied a school record with 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in a win over Post on April 23, but her success was not limited to the lacrosse field. The junior Accounting major did all of this while carrying a 3.57 grade-point average and dedicating more than 20 hours per week to an internship with the Bonadio Group.
The Penfield, N.Y., native's accomplishments don't stop there. She led the ECC in scoring with 104 points, including 95 during the regular season, was a first-team All-ECC selection for the second straight year and was named ECC Attacker of the Year. She was also selected Roberts Wesleyan University's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for April.
Blumenstock's success carried over into May as she scored the winning goal 4:07 into overtime to give Roberts a 12-11 victory over rival Mercy in the ECC Championship game. Blumenstock, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship, finished the season with 42 goals and 62 assists.
The Penfield, N.Y. native ranks third in NCAA Division II in assists, fourth in assists per game (3.44) and is tied for 10
th in points per game (5.78). She began playing both lacrosse and basketball in second grade and spent two seasons as the Patriots' varsity point guard.
A Cleveland Browns fan who enjoys playing golf in the off season, Blumenstock plans to get her CPA and pursue a career in accounting after graduating from Roberts.
Until then, she will strive to continue doing what it takes to lead the Redhawks, who finished this season with a 13-5 record, to another ECC title and a berth in the 2025 NCAA Division II Tournament.
Blumenstock took a few moments to discuss being a student-athlete at Roberts. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
Does your basketball background help you with lacrosse?
"I think it does. I was a point guard in basketball and obviously basketball is a little faster paced, but with controlling the ball and trying to lead everyone and making sure that we get the best look on the shot. I think my point guard mentality from basketball plays into lacrosse and I kind of take on the same role. I want to set up my plays for my teammates in different ways."
What was it like to score the winning goal in overtime to give your team a championship?
"It was awesome. Honestly, it was probably the easiest play that we had all game. I couldn't believe it because once I got past the first girl, I was like 'Wait, it's just me and the goalie' and it was really on me to find the back of the net and then once I did it was honestly a relief that we did it and we didn't have to play another second because we had won."
What has been your favorite course at Roberts?
"I would probably say my Tax Accounting class, just because it was the most realistic. It was probably the most challenging class that I have had, but it was realistic class and it was hands-on and probably the most applicable class to my career." Â
When did you know that Roberts was the place for you?
"On my visit when I was with the team. I just saw the culture that they had and how everyone was friends and everyone did things together. I knew that was the kind of team that I wanted to be a part of. I also saw how Coach Kristin and Coach Pete coached and I love being coached like that, so it all worked out."
How would you describe your experience at Roberts so far?
"Overall, it has just been so awesome to have the opportunity to play. Coming in freshman year I had the opportunity to play and then last year the opportunity got bigger and then this year it just continued to grow to where I was able to have an impact. It has just been awesome to have my role continue to grow, that's what I wanted and I wanted to be able to go somewhere where I would be confident in myself and my ability to play and compete with the teams that we play against. I just wanted to be successful and I have one more year to continue doing that."
Do you have any pregame superstitions?
"Yes, they are a little ridiculous. When we are in warmups and we are doing shooting, I make sure that I throw the first pass from low left and little things like that. I just like staying consistent and make sure that I wear the same socks and stuff like that. I definitely have a routine."
You chose to attend college close to home and your family is at every game. How nice is it to have their support?
"I am so glad that I chose to stay close to home because having my family at every game has been so helpful to me and just knowing that they are going to be there to support me afterwards regardless of whether we win or lose has been amazing."
How were you able to handle everything that you had going on this spring between your internship, classes and lacrosse?
"At the time, managing my schedule was difficult. It took me a little while to figure it out, but I realized that I needed to stay ahead on work and take advantage of the breaks that I had. A busy schedule helps me to stay productive and on top of everything and this allowed for me to be 100% focused when it came time for lacrosse."Â
What does being a Redhawk mean to you?
"To me, being a Redhawk is about the players before me who have built this program. In my three years here, there have been so many teammates who have impacted my game. I make sure to play for them and to make sure the standards and culture that they built continue on."
