Bowling Battles Back to Take Third at Mercyhurst

ERIE, PA – After dropping a pair of matches to Mercyhurst University in the season-opening Mercyhurst Invitational Tournament, the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Bowling team posted a 4-1 victory over the host Lakers to take third place in the tournament.

The Redhawks (5-5) won a pair of matches Saturday with victories over Wright State, who eventually finished second in the tournament, and William Smith College.

On Sunday, Roberts won consecutive matches against Daemen University and Penn State Behrend to secure fourth place after the initial round of bowling.

In the position round match, the Redhawks fell to Mercyhurst and had to face top-seeded and nationally-ranked Niagara University in the semifinal round.

Roberts dropped a 4-1 decision to the Purple Eagles and earned a spot in the third-place match against Mercyhurst for the third time in the tournament.

The Lakers posted a 183-141 win in the first game but Roberts came roaring back with a 201-180 win in the second to even the score at 1-1. A 185-138 win in the third game gave Roberts the lead and a 189-138 victory in the fourth gave the Redhawks a 3-1 edge.

In game five, Roberts put together its best score of the weekend with a dominating 245-154 win to claim third place in the final tournament standings.

On Saturday, senior Amelia Ponto led the team with a 967 series and an average score of 193.4 and junior Abigail Barnard was second on the squad with a 188.2 average and a 941 series.
