KENMORE, NY – The Roberts Wesleyan University Bowling team rallied for a convincing 4-0 sweep over Daemen University in the position round of the Hilbert Hammer Classic Tournament over the weekend to place fifth overall in the final competition of the first semester schedule.
The Redhawks finished the first day of the tournament with a win and four losses in the traditional format matches Saturday with the victory coming against Mercyhurst University by a score of 874-750.
On Sunday in the Baker format scoring, Roberts lost a 915-819 match to D'Youville University but rebounded for a 865-839 win over William Smith College and then had revenge against D'Youville with a 904-758 win.
The Redhawks dropped a tight 873-867 match to William Smith after a solid comeback effort and moved on to the position round match against Daemen for 5th or 6th place in the tournament.
Roberts opened with a 50-pin victory (195-145) in the first game and took a 2-0 lead with a 180-150 win in the second game. The Redhawks edged the Wildcats 175-173 in the third game to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best of seven format.
The Redhawks completed the sweep with a 162-147 victory in the fourth game.
Junior Abigail Barnard led Roberts with an average of 188.20 Saturday to finish fifth overall in the individual standings to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Senior Amelia Ponto was 11th with an average score of 176.80.
The first semester schedule has been completed and the Redhawks resume the season January 16-18 at the Northeast Classic in New Castle, Delaware.
