Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Graduate student Georgia Haverlock led the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team with 26 points but an early deficit was too much to overcome as Staten Island took an early 19-6 lead and raced to a 74-57 win Wednesday night in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game at the Sports and Recreation Center.

Staten Island (19-7 overall, 12-2 ECC) took advantage of a strong early start and held a 19-6 lead after one quarter.

Roberts (2-19, 2-11 ECC) battled back and held the Dolphins to just five points in the second quarter and trimmed six points off the lead. Staten Island led 24-17 at the end of the first half.

The Dolphins rebounded to score 27 points in the third quarter and increased their lead by 10 points and led 51-34 after three quarters.

A pair of 3-pointers by Haverlock and senior Lauren McCrae to start the fourth quarter helped to trim the lead. Senior Grace Dow added a layup at the 8:31 mark to cut the lead to 12 points.

After a 7-0 run by the Dolphins, Haverlock connected on two more 3-pointers to cut the lead to 13 points at 61-48 with 6:22 remaining.

Haverlock led all scorers with her 26 points. McCrae added nine points while Dow and junior Marianna Freeman combined for 10 points and seven rebounds.

Roberts returns home Saturday to face the University of the District of Columbia for Senior Day at the Voller Athletic Center.
