Comeback Effort Falls Short for Women’s Lacrosse

DOBBS FERRY, NY – Senior Tannah O'Neill-Blake scored twice in the fourth quarter for the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Lacrosse team but the three-goal surge late in the game for the Redhawks was not enough as Mercy University posted a 10-8 win Sunday in the final East Coast Conference (ECC) game of the season.

The loss by two goals pushed Roberts (7-7 overall, 5-1 ECC) down to second place in the final regular-season standings. The Redhawks will host Molloy University at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the ECC Tournament semifinal game on Redhawks Turf Field.

Freshman Lia MacDougall and senior Emma Blumenstock scored goals in the first five minutes of action to give Roberts the early 2-0 lead.

Mercy answered with four consecutive goals to take a 4-2 edge before the Redhawks rallied with goals by junior Kadie Tierney and senior Annie Mulhall to knot the score at 4-4 before the end of the high-scoring first quarter.

Junior Ella Dossier gave Roberts a 5-4 lead as she carried the ball from behind the net before making a dodge move to gain free space and scored eighth goal of the season and extended a streak of three straight games with at least a goal.

The Mavericks tied the score three minutes later and the goal sparked a six-goal run as Mercy took a 10-5 lead before the end of the third period.

Roberts scored all three goals in the final quarter with two from O'Neill-Blake and the second of the day for Mulhall but a late turnover allowed Mercy to run out the clock for the victory.

Mulhall and Blumenstock led the offense with three points each and senior Shawna Lesmerises made 14 saves in the Roberts goal.
