Bowling Battles Top Teams in Northeast Classic

NEWCASTLE, DE – Junior Abigail Barnard led the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Bowling team over the weekend at the Northeast Classic hosted by Sacred Heart University in Delaware.

The tournament featured some of the top teams in the country as the second semester schedules started for a majority of the teams.

Roberts battled with Howard University and Long Island University Sunday in the position round of the tournament and wrapped up competition in 32nd place overall.

Jacksonville State won the tournament and Vanderbilt University was second followed by Wichita State, Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Maryville University, Sam Houston State, Youngstown State, University of Nebraska and North Carolina A&T rounded out the top 10 teams in the final standings.

Roberts downed St. Thomas Aquinas College (832-476) and Norfolk State University (767-628) on Friday afternoon on the first day of competition.

On day two, the Redhawks had a difficult draw with four teams that finished in the top 10 including Nebraska, Jacksonville State, Youngstown and Sam Houston but earned a matchup against Howard University in the position round matches Sunday.

Roberts dropped the first game against Howard but came back to win the next four games for a 4-1 victory and a matchup against Long Island University. After a 4-1 loss to the Sharks, Roberts had a rematch with Howard to finish the tournament.

Roberts took a 3-1 lead in the match but Howard rallied to win the next three games for a 4-3 win in the match.

Barnard led the Redhawks with a 187.0 average on the first day of bowling. Fellow junior Rebecca Spry was next for Roberts with a 169.20 average. Freshman Michelle Cummings was next with her 161.60 average and sophomore Kaylee Stephens was fourth with a 154.40 average. Freshman Jade Stalvo rounded out the top five for the Redhawks with a 125.60 average.

Roberts is off until February when the Redhawks travel to Hilbert College for a dual match on February 7.
