The Roberts' women (6-5, 1-1 AMC) fell to Indiana Wesleyan (10-2) 80-61 on December 11 in their second and final game of the Shawnee State Classic in Portsmouth, Ohio.
The Wildcats started the game with an 11-4 run, 5 points coming from LeAnn Douglas. The Raiders fought back, tying the game 19-19 after two free throws by sophomore guard Marissa Bunce with 6 minutes remaining in the first half. However, a three pointers by All – American Elaine Hessel gave the Bears the lead again and they closed the half 35-28.
The Raiders never got any closer than their 7 point halftime gap. The Wildcats pushed their lead to 20 points after a jumper by Kayla Thompson at 13:06 and maintained at least a 16 point lead for the remainder of the game.
The Raiders shot 36.4% from the field, while the Wildcats made 50% of their attempts. The Roberts' women forced 13 turnovers, but committed 17 and only made 3 assists compared to the Wildcats' 15. The Raiders totaled 3 steals, while Indiana Wesleyan made 9 and won the rebound battle 39-32.
Indiana Wesleyan was led by Hessel with 16 points. Stephanie Burtch and LeAnn Douglas scored 13 and 12 points respectively and Douglas added 7 boards and 4 assists. Krystal Stoneking finished with 11 points.
Afterwards Coach Bob Segave said,” I was pleased with our effort this afternoon. We competed hard. This was a good experience for our team. Indiana Wesleyan is a very strong team and will be heard from at the tournament. Our players understand what it will take to achieve similar success. I thought that Lindsay (Kendall) really played well and it was good to see Bunce hit some shots.”
The Lady Raiders hit the hardwood next in a home game against R.I.T. on December 14, 2010 at the Voller Athletic Center at 7 P.M.
