ROCHESTER, N.Y. (December 7, 2011) - The Men's Basketball team defeated Nazareth College this evening 61-59 in a hotly contested home opener for the Raiders.
Before the game,
Alif Bland was honored for reaching the 1,000 career points mark. Bland reached the prestigious mark on November 25th when the Raiders played Pitt-Johnstown in the Gary Miller Classic in Erie, Pa. Bland now has 1,092 career points.
The Raiders cruised to a 28-16 half time lead as the visiting Golden Flyers stuggeld to score, shooting only 20.8% from the field. The Raiders shot 52% from the field in the first half, thanks to senior forward
Alif Bland going 6 of 8 in the first half.
In the second half, the Raiders jumped out early and built a 46-27 lead with 9:43 left in the game.
The Golden Flyers would chip away at the lead and forced the Raiders to win the game on two free throws.
Bland would make the the front end of a one and one with six seconds remaing to make it a 60-59 Raider lead. Then with one second left on the clock,
Patrick Downer hit the back end of two free throws to wrap the game up for the Raiders.
Bland led the Raiders with 25 points and 12 rebounds. The senior went 10 of 14 from the floor and was 5 of 8 from the free throw line.
Mike Stone was a perfect 8 of 8 from the charity stripe and finished with 17 points for the Raiders.
The Golden Flyers were led by Jason Corletta's 25 points. Tyshun Stephens chipped in 14 points for the visitors.
The win puts the Raiders at 4-7 on the season and have now won two in a row.
The Raiders host former American Mideast Conference rivals Notre Dame College (Ohio) this Friday at 7pm.
