Lady Raiders Shut Down Point Park

Lady Raiders Shut Down Point Park

The Lady Raiders (15-9, 8-4 AMC) got another key AMC Conference win on Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Voller Athletic Center at Roberts Wesleyan College. The women defeated the Point Park University Pioneers (12-12, 4-9 AMC) by a score of 64 -29.

With the score at 6 -5 following a three pointer from Point Park sophomore April Austin (9 points) the Lady Raiders scored 18 straight points to take a 24 – 5 lead at the ten minute mark of the first half. Forward Sarah Child (JR, Albany, NY) started the run with 2 baskets sandwiched around a baseline three pointer from Cynnetha Bellinger (SR, Binghamton, NY). Marissa Bunce (SO, Phelps, NY) added a three, followed by a jumper from Lindsay Kendall (SO, Rochester, NY). Back to back steals and layups from Morgan Skiff (JR, Rochester, NY) and Brittany McMillon (SR, Lyons, NY) pushed the lead to 17 points and senior point guard Tiffany Wilson (Rochester, NY) capped the run with a layup. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half and Roberts led 35 – 16 going into intermission.

After a layup from senior guard Ashley Henderson (7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) opened the second half scoring, the Raiders really turned up the defensive intensity. Roberts Wesleyan, ranked number one in the AMC in scoring defense, FG percentage defense, three point percentage defense and rebounding, held the Pioneers to 11 points for the remainder of the game. The Raider defense held Point Park to 16% shooting from the field, forced 16 turnovers and won the boards 50 – 38.

Bunce (2 three's) and McMillon led the scoring for the Raiders with 10 points each. McMillon added 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocked shots and a steal. The game saw a 16 year school record fall for rebounds in a single game. Roberts gathered in 76 rebounds, breaking the old record of 74. Child led the way, finishing with a game high 13 rebounds. Bianca Jones (JR, Long Island City, NY) added 9 points and 4 rebounds. Katie Lowell (SR, Binghamton, NY) came off the bench to score 4 points and add 7 rebounds. Bellinger (2 three's) finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Skiff added a game high 4 steals and Child added 3 blocked shots.

“Our team defense was tremendous again tonight,” said Raider coach Bob Segave.  “Point Park has two very good guards, a solid post player and some good perimeter shooters. They average 66 points per game. Our guards really worked hard on Henderson and Austin, and that set the tone. We had great balance in our scoring and we shot the ball well from the field and the three. We really battled on the boards too. As coaches, we are pleased with the effort and attention to detail that the team is playing with.”

The Raiders wrap up their AMC home schedule with a Senior Day contest against Walsh University on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 2PM. Walsh (21 – 4), winners of 16 straight including a first place showdown win over Daemen College on Tuesday, comes in ranked 10th in the latest NAIA DII National Poll. The game will be broadcast by WCER 900AM at http://www.wcer.us/
