Becky Maher, of Baldwinsville, NY, signed a Letter of Intent with Roberts Wesleyan College to be a member of the volleyball team in the fall of 2011. Head coaches Jon and Kirsten Meyers are excited to add Becky to the roster as a contributor both on and off the court.
Becky's volleyball experience has led her through the pipeline of Baldwinsville volleyball, a perennial state contender in Class AA. She was a two-year member of the varsity team, helping her team to a state runner-up finish her junior year, and a NYSPHSAA Class AA State Championship her senior year. “The atmosphere at Baldwinsville is a rarity,” said Kirsten. “We've been there a few times to see Becky play. The whole community shows up for volleyball games. You can't get a seat in the stands. It is pretty awesome.” As a captain, Becky has developed into a leader on the court. Her solid play in serve receive and on defense is attributed to the high-level coaching and big-game experience she has had. Becky's club experience includes five seasons with Baldwinsville Blast. “Becky is a true ball-control specialist,” commented Jon. “She understands the game, is quick with her platform and her hands, and is able to read the play as it develops. I see Becky developing into a successful collegiate player as she works her way into the speed and intensity of the game.” Becky's involvement in several beach volleyball leagues has improved her soft touch of the ball. It is not often you will find Becky away from a volleyball court of some sort throughout the year. Becky joins a recruiting class of eight freshman that look to push the Raiders in the fall of 2011.
Becky is a member of the High Honor Roll and Charles W. Baker High School, showing that her academics are more important that athletics. She is a committed athlete and committed student, earning her way into Spanish Honor Society. Just recently, Becky was given the chance to travel with forty other students at her high school to Spain. According to her, the experience was one she won't soon forget, and has discovered a love for traveling. “Becky's well-rounded personality and immediate connection with the current players make her a perfect fit for the team,” said Kirsten. “She is rooted in faith and selected Roberts Wesleyan through prayer and counsel. We are confident that she will benefit the entire Roberts Wesleyan community throughout her four years as a student athlete.”
Becky's older sister, Katie, is a returning senior captain for the volleyball team, and she is thrilled to have her sister join the team next year. Katie said, “Having Becky on the team next year will be an awesome experience as sisters, but also as friends. Becky and I are close friends and I'm excited to see what God has planned for us in our year at RWC together.”
Becky has yet to determine her concentrated area of study at Roberts Wesleyan, but is interested in discovering what various majors have to offer. Becky made the decision to attend Roberts Wesleyan after much deliberation, but ultimately, “I knew I wanted to play volleyball,” she said. “I have enjoyed getting to know the coaches, and my sister is already at the school. Because it is close to home, my parents can watch us both play. Above all else, it is a Christian school where I can learn and grow in my own faith.” She is the daughter of John and Jackie Maher, and has one sister, Katie.
