Women’s Soccer Splits over the Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (August 30, 2011) - The women's soccer team split over the weekend in Bourbonnais, IL.

In the first game of the weekend, the Raiders fell to #17 Olivet Nazarene University 0-1 in overtime. The Raiders played great defensively limiting Olivet to just five shots on goal and forcing the Tigers to shoot a lot of their shots from 25 yards out or more. The game was back and forth with both teams getting good looks at the goal but neither being able to break down the defense. Olivet finally broke through in the 98th minute as Meghan Pipal found the back of the net to give the Tigers the win. Junior goalkeeper Breanna Maggio recorded four saves in her first collegiate match for the Raiders.

In the second game of the weekend, the Raiders played Missouri Baptist University. The Raiders came out slow and looked sluggish for much of the match. Junior Ashley Drenth put the Raiders on top in 26th minute scoring her first collegiate goal for the Raiders off a corner kick. The Raiders would remain in the lead until the 51st minute when Sarah O'Donnell tied the score for the Spartans. However, that is all the Raiders needed to get going. Erika Luedke put the Raiders back on top in the 59th minute and the offense kept rolling as the Raiders would go on to score three more goals. Kristina Roberts put the Raiders up 3-1 in the 63rd minute. Mandi Hochheimer and Vanessa Sell would also score to give the Raiders a 5-1 victory. Breanna Maggio recorded three saves to record her first win of the season.

“I am proud of the way we played this weekend,” commented Head Coach Dan Berg. “We were unfortunate to lose Friday night but in the seven years I have been here that is the best we have looked defensively. We are still fighting through some injuries but I am looking forward to a great season.”

The Raiders are back in the action this weekend as they play host to Bethel College, IN on Friday night at 5:00pm and Huntington College on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm.
