ROCHESTER, NY (September 12, 2011) – The Men's Tennis team won the annual Flower City Tournament over the weekend. The Raiders earned the championship by winning dual matches against Rochester Institute of Technology, Hobart College, and Oneonta State.

"Every player performed well and represented Roberts Wesleyan College in a highly professional manner,” said Coach Tom Linart. “Locally, the tournaments win holds major 'bragging rights' and helps support the credibility of our move to DII."

On Saturday, the Raiders cruised past RIT 9-0 in the opening round. In singles action, sophomore Beka Buchurkuri defeated the Tigers' Clayton Tontarski 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Buchurkuri and Julio Toledo won 8-4 against Tennyson Saucedo and Clayton Tontarski.

“In singles we won the deciding matches and pressure points every time we needed one,” said Linart. “We fought hard every point and never lost our focus on the court.”

In the semifinal round, the Raiders advanced 5-4 over Hobart College. Julio Toledo earned a hard fought victory in singles (6-2, 7-6 (5)) to help the Raiders advance to the final for the second consecutive year.

On Sunday, the Raiders faced an Oneonta State squad in the final that had defeated St. Lawrence University and the University of Rochester. The Raiders came out on top, winning 5-2 after the top two singles matches were unfinished. Burchukuri continued his impressive tournament, winning (2-6, 6-1, 6-3) against Mackenzie Park to help seal the victory.

With the victories, the Raiders start the fall schedule undefeated at 3-0. The team is back in action next weekend in Grand Rapids, MI when they participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association tournament.
